Recipients

Our 2007 Bursary Recipient: Kyla Bernard, Halifax, Nova Scotia - This year’s bursary recipient is a student at St. Francis Xavier University who is an example of hard work and dedication….not only to her community, family and friends, but….to her studies. She has received honors on her path to becoming an elementary school teacher, while single-handedly raising two young children who are 3 and 7 years old. She will graduate in the spring of 2008 with a Bachelor of Education Degree. This award goes to a young lady who was born and raised in the largest Mi’kmaq Community in the world called….Eskasoni. Eskasoni is located in Cape Breton and has a population of approx. 4000 people.

Our 2006 Bursary Recipient: Hien Truong, Halifax, Nova Scotia - Hien is our FIRST recipient of a $1,000.00 bursary award! Our President, Brenda Saunders/Todd, says the organization is thrilled to be able to provide a substantial amount for the bursary award this year, due to successful fund-raising techniques. Hien was an elementary school teacher and an assistant to the General Director in Degussa, Vietnam. In preparation for University, Hien attended Halifax Immigrant Learning Centre; she was the hires as an Administrative Assistant at that school. She is a student at SMU, also attending summer sessions to accelerate her completion date, in addition to working two part-time jobs.

Bursary Committee Chair, Deborah Stover is shown in the photo with Hien Truong and presented the cheque to our recipient this year at the Lord Nelson Hotel on the 14th of June, 2006, where our AGM was held.

Our 2002 Bursary Recipient was Alison Beaton - a fourth year Physiotherapy student at Dalhousie University. Twenty-two year old Alison Beaton of Mabou says receiving the bursary in her final year is perfect timing. Beaton spent last summer in South Africa getting practical work experience. When she graduates in May, she hopes to practice in the Yukon, Northwest Territories or Northern Alberta. She believes by working in a general hospital in a small community she will receive a broader base of experience and hopes to be able to participate in community outreach programs.

Bursary Committee Chair Deborah Stover says the bursary was established by the Network to show support and encouragement for women striving to achieve their educational goals. "I think is it is important that women support and care for other women. Women are notoriously known as care givers, but we often forget to look after ourselves and help each other."

Our 2001 Bursary Recipient was Kristin Firth.

Kristin was awarded the second HWN bursary on October 10, 2001.
